Swift Transportation

Swift Transportation began operations on October 10th, 1966 by providing transportation for imported steel through the ports of Los Angeles to Arizona and for the exportation of Arizona cotton back through to Southern California.

Jerry Moyes, founder, began with the same entrepreneurial, can-do spirit that remains one of Swift’s core values today. The original operation was conducted under the name of Common Market. Operating authority was later purchased from a descendant of the Swift Meat Packing family resulting in a change to today’s name of Swift Transportation. Jerry, with his father Carl Moyes, brother Ronald Moyes, and Randy Knight, worked through typical start up challenges to grow the business to $25 million in annual revenue by 1984. With the passing of Jerry’s father, Jerry became the sole owner.

By 1990, Swift had grown to a $125 million carrier with 800 trucks. Swift’s significant revenue growth is attributable to internal growth with existing customers as well as through acquisitions. Since 1988, Swift has acquired 13 additional motor carriers.

On September 8th, 2017, Swift Transportation and Knight Transportation merged to create, Knight-Swift Transportation Holdings Inc., or “Knight-Swift”. This truckload carrier merger is the largest in history and trades under the ticker “KNX”. Along with Knight and Swift Transportation, the holding company also includes Barr-Nunn Transportation and Abilene Motor Express. All brands share best practices while continuing to operate separately within Knight-Swift Transportation Holdings Inc.

Swift’s terminal network has grown to over forty full-service facilities in the continental United States and Mexico combined. Swift owns 100% of Trans-Mex, a Nuevo Laredo, Mexico based carrier. Swift offers a broad range of services that include over-the-road full-truckload, dedicated, flatbed, intermodal, logistics, warehousing, and transportation through all major Mexican border crossings. Today, Swift generates nearly $4 billion in revenue, operates over 14,000 trucks and is the largest full-truckload motor carrier in North America.
